Part of the Outplay group, EightPixelsSquare is a dynamic and cutting-edge games studio based in Derbyshire, on the edge of the stunning peak district national park. Best known for hit games Raid HQ, All Guns Blazing, Cartel Kings and Retro Soccer!

Our highly experienced development team bring decades of experience, delivered at the highest level across all game development disciplines.

Alongside our Live Ops and Analytics team, our Designers use our custom tools to develop games which are highly engaging, fun and constantly evolving

We are currently looking for Gameplay Designers to add to our ambitious Design team here at EightPixels, as we continue to develop our next big release.

This is an amazing opportunity to work on our next big title and get stuck into mission design and driving the balancing of gameplay features.

Areas of Delivery  

  • Mission design & implementation - Using Unity3D tools to create or modify NPC and enemy behaviour in the game.
  • Assisting in the design and balancing/tweaking of gameplay features and helping to ensure these are implemented in-game to a high standard.
  • Play testing and assisting in bug fixing of features so that they reach a releasable standard.
  • Presentation and explanation of the designs to relevant team members.
  • Production, updating and maintaining design documentation where necessary.
  • Work closely with the team in the design and balancing of gameplay mechanics and features. The Designer will also be responsible for implementing any changes requested by the Producer.
  • The Designer will need to ensure that all work is completed within the timeframe specified by the Producer/Directors.
  • Liaise with programmers and artists during the implementation of features.
  • Liaise with the coding team in the development of tools and features relevant to the game design.
  • Where necessary, consider consequences of future changes ensuring that this is reflected in the relevant documentation and the appropriate individuals are informed.
  • Work with key leads to ensure work is completed in accordance with project milestones.
  • Where necessary, offer solutions to problems to maximise the efficiency and contribute to the overall development of the project.
  • The game designer will be expected to take on board feedback from various sources (producer, review group, focus testing, publisher, license holder, etc) and implement any necessary changes or revisions.

Desired Talent

  • Previous experience in a similar industry and role would be highly desirable but not essential.
  • Initiative and self-disciplined approach to work.
  • A keen interest in a wide variety of game genres and games in general, especially mobile & free to play games.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex ideas to different disciplines in a clear and accurate manner.
  • Strong understanding of mobile & free to play games, their related technology, and the tools used to build them.
  • Good knowledge of using 3D game editor tools (e.g. Unity 3D / Unreal) to create and modify NPC/enemy behavior in games.
  • A general intuitive knowledge of what constitutes good gameplay design, especially for mobile free to play games.
  • Broad knowledge and interest in game theory and design principles
  • Self-motivated, hard worker with a team-focused attitude and ability to both give and take feedback and criticisms
